Trans-Fats Will Be Banned In The United States
According to the US regulators, trans-fats are unhealthy and unsafe to eat. They must be banned from the food supply in next three years. The US Food and Drug Administration, said that PHOs (partially hydrogenated oils), are not safe for eating. The PHOs are the main source of trans-fats. This ban should save many lives by preventing heart attacks. Since 2006, food suppliers must show trans-fats information on the labels of their products. Despite this, people in America still consume too much.
According to Stephen Ostroff, a FDA's Acting Commissioner, this action should prove to people that they are concerned for hearth health of all people who live in America. This is an attempt to eliminate the source of artificial trans-fats. In addition, this action should prevent thousands heart attacks every year and to reduce coronary heart disease.
Pumping hydrogen oils with hydrogen, makes them semi-solid or solid. The popularity of trans-fats started in the 70s, when margarine became very popular. Even today, people eat a lot of food that contains trans-fat. Just some of the food that contains them is: fried meats, frosting and French fries. They are cheap to produce, but they have a long shelf life. In order to understand how much they are dangerous, you must know that the World Health Organization calls them ‘’TOXIC’’. Thanks to the US regulators, many food companies are trying to remove trans-fats from their products.
The trans-fats consumption was reduced by 78% in the United States, when the FDA started labeling them. In the United Kingdom, ban of trans-fats is expected for several years. They are banned in Denmark, since 2003.
